Kerala is a South Indian picturesque state. It has a number of scenic places that are worth visiting. There are mountains, rivers, backwaters, lush green paddy fields and palm trees. The state is divided into fourteen districts.

Pathanamthitta is the youngest district in Kerala that was formed on November 1st, 1982. Pathanamthitta is derived from the words “Pathanam” and “thitta” which means an array of houses on the riverside. Many of the present divided regions were under the control of Pandalam supremacy. Pandalam was under the control of Pandya kingdom. Pathanamthitta now includes portions of former regions of Kollam, Alapuzha and Idukki districts. Pathanamthitta, Adoor, Ranni, Konni and Kozhencherry are some of the important places taken from Kollam district and Thiruvalla and Mallapally are the places taken from Alapuzha district. It is bound by the Western Ghats in the east, Alapuzha in the West, Idukki on the north and Kollam in the South. The world famous Ayyappa temple at Sabarimala or Sabari hills is located in this district. The district is also famous for Vasthu Vidya. The main rivers of this region include the Pamba, Manimala and Achenkovil. The tourist season is from August to March. There are lush green paddy fields and estates of pepper, cardamom, tapioca and rubber. The place can be accesses by air. The nearest airport is Thiruvanandapuram which is 119 kms and Nedumbassery airport which is 146 Kms from Pathanamthitta. The nearest railway station is Thiruvalla which is at a distance of 30 km from the town.

The Ayappa shrine draws huge crowds from all over India during the months of November- January annually. This is a famous pilgrim center which is located 65 km from Pathanamthitta town and 180Km from the state capital and 210 kms from Kochi.
