| I've actually never tried drugs and don't plan on it. I've had an uncle that was addicted to marijuana and he lost part of his one leg in a car accident due to drugs. It's scary and I don't understand why someone would want to waste their life doing drugs.please advice them to take a drug treament program. |

|
|
|
The brain is extraordinarily sensitive to alcohol. Alcohol is a depressant drug that reduces the pace of brain activity by a combination of effects. Alcohol affects the function of neurotransmitters by altering the communication between them. A sufficient dose can shut down brain function that can lead to unconsciousness or death.
Alcohol dependence occurs through changes in the brain through long-term exposure. Prolonged exposure to alcohol can cause the brain to become dependent on the presence of alcohol in order to maintain an appropriate level of brain activity. Cessation of drinking following long-term use will result in a withdrawal syndrome. Prolonged abuse will result in the loss of brain cells. The direct toxic effect of alcohol on brain function is compounded by the accompanying poor nutritional status of long term abusers.

A number of factors influence how and to what extent alcohol affects the brain, including
* how much and how often a person drinks;
* the age at which he or she first began drinking, and how long he or she has been drinking;
* the person’s age, level of education, gender, genetic background, and family history of alcoholism;
* whether he or she is at risk as a result of prenatal alcohol exposure; and
* his or her general health status.

Drug treatment will give only what has been put into it. Since drug addiction and alcoholism are chronic diseases, relapse is an expected part of the recovery process. This is something the treatment centers try to deal with in arming addicts with skills to prevent relapse. No matter the quality or expense of the treatment center, prevention of relapse cannot be guaranteed.

There are many things to consider why a person is addicted to drugs and alcohol and even to cigarettes. I think it is important to help your loved one get out of the habit. It is still best to see a health expert regarding this issue.

| People do drugs mostly because they are unaware of its effects. Drug rehabs all around the world are working to cure these patients; Casa de Palmas is one such rehab. |
