Most people are spending a lot of time at work, sitting in the office while using a computer — at least 40 hours a week. This isn't counting the amount of computer use at home. Gradually, chronic pain symptoms begin to surface. Many people are soon afflicted by neck and back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, poor posture, and chronic numbness in the limbs. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services promotes and encourages greater ergonomic conditions in the workplace. Employee health, satisfaction, and productivity are all directly related to workplace ergonomics. The better the quality of the workplace and its ergonomics, the less risk there is of musculoskeletal injuries, emotional stress, and the need for health-necessitated vacation time.
