Chandigarh Capital Region (CCR) is emerging as the next knowledge hub for the IT sector in India today, said Mr. S.K. Sandhu, Secretary Information Technology, UT, Chandigarh, at a press conference held on June 22, at Hotel Mountview to announce the e-Revolution 2006 event next month.

This is the second mega IT event which is being jointly hosted by the state governments of Haryana and Panjab along with the UT Administration, and Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) at Hotel Taj, Chandigarh, on 19-21 July.

The major objective is to showcase to the IT companies from various other states and abroad about the true potential of this region notwithstanding the advantage which the local IT companies will gain through their interaction with Nasscom and some of the leading IT entrepreneurs, said Mr. Sandhu.

Mr. N.S. Kalsi, Secretary IT, Panjab, said that the IT companies are now exploring Tier II city to set up their ventures for which this region is fully prepared with the right infrastructure support.

Mr. Kalsi said that a wide area network backbone is being set up in the state of Punjab covering 74 subdivisions and 144 blocks so as to take the benefits of IT to the grassroot level, and these services would be functional in the next nine months time.

Mr. Anurag Rastogi, Managing Director, Hartron, also affirmed a similar plan for the state of Haryana. He said that the planning is at a full swing to setup technology park in Panchkula and hopefully would be ready in a year's time.

Mr. Rastogi said that the all the three states have worked together in promoting this region as the IT hub as well as on the e-governance front, and has the right kind of support system for the entrepreneurs to attract here and realise their dreams.

Mr. Sanjay Tyagi, Additional Director, STPI, said that the past years have seen tremendous increase in software exports from this region, and this event shall further stimulate the growth manifolds.

Mr. Manjit Singh Brar, Director IT, UT Administration, highlighted the improvement in infrastructure and the new initiatives envisaged by the government to launch the third phase of the IT initiative. He also informed that the e-revolution 2006 shall address the agenda - creating value in the business eco-system for IT-ITES industry as well as explore opportunities for Shared Services in the national e-governance initiative.

Mr. Rajan Vasudevan, Secretary, Chandigarh IT Club, said that the club had been providing networking platform to the IT professionals in the region, and had been actively associated in promoting IT in the region in association with the local government.

Sangeeta Gupta, Vice President, Nasscom, in her email for the press conference stated that the performance of the Indian IT Software and Services sector has been very encouraging in the year 2005-06 with revenues touching USD 29.6 billion.

Chandigarh, with its neighboring townships offers an excellent opportunity for the industry, and E-revolution 2006, will go a long way in establishing the city as a potential hub for the IT industry in India, she remarked.

On the first day, the plenary sessions by NASSCOM shall focus on the ICT potential of the northern states, particularly in the Chandigarh Capital Region (including Panchkula, Baddi, Mohali). The sessions also cover New Thinking about Innovation: Making Change Work For You, Effective Strategies for Emerging Companies, and Industry - Academia collaboration for sustaining India's competitive edge.

The second day's focus is on striking the balance between effective service levels and cost-efficiency through Shared Services, an area of intense current interest to both multi-locational corporates and governments. It looks to furthering the ways in which Information and Communication Technology (ICT) can deliver more towards making the process of Government a faster, fairer and friendlier one. Through the National Action Plan (2003-05) on e-governance, many governments across the country are looking at Shared Services. This will ensure responsiveness to the citizen's needs, while curtailing costs and redundancy in IT infrastructure.

e-Revolution 2006 shall also showcase CCR as a top achiever in the realm of e-governance in the country. It also espouses the advancement of the region as a whole by forging a common platform between governments, businesses, and by facilitating collaboration. As such, it will draw together central ministers, senior bureaucrats, corporate planners, HR heads, CEOs, policy advisors, education experts and local entrepreneurs in a constructive agenda to promote the region even further.

Besides the formal seminar sessions, there are visits to the Technology Parks, an e-governance clinic, and networking dinners for informal interaction.

Registrations to the event are open online through a dedicated website www.erevindia.com hosted by the event's organizer, Cybermedia Events.
