Chandigarh’s famous landmark, the Sukhna Lake, is shrinking and has been reduced to half its original size even as the ‘City Beautiful’ continues to expand.

The man-made lake, which is popular among tourists, boating enthusiasts and daily morning and evening walkers, has a capacity of only about 513 hectare metres against the original capacity of over 1,074 hectare metres in the late 1950s when it was built. Cold conditions abated in Punjab and Haryana as the minimum temperature rose in the region.

In Punjab, Ludhiana registered a low of 11.5 degrees Celsius, while the minimum at Patiala settled at 11.3 deg C.

The minimum at Amritsar was 8.8 deg C.

Cold conditions continued to sweep Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh, though mercury went up by two notches above normal.

Amritsar remained the coldest place in the region as it recorded a minimum temperature of 1.2 degree Celsius, dipping by three notches below normal, the MET office said here.

Chandigarh and its neighbouring states Punjab and Haryana experienced overcast conditions accompanied with dense fog but got respite from chilly weather Sunday.

The centrally-administered city, which shivered at 2.2 degrees Celsius Saturday, saw an increase in temperature of over 6 degrees in the last 24 hours. The city would witness a solar eclipse on July 22. The eclipse would start at 5.35 am and end at 7.24 am. It is after 10 years that a total solar eclipse would be seen in India.

However, Chandigarh residents would witness only a partial eclipse — 80 per cent. The duration of the eclipse would be 1 hour 49 minutes. This would be the longest solar eclipse till 2114.

Low-cost Dubai-based carrier FlyDubai, which was scheduled to begin its operations in India from July 13 has decided to delay its foray”due to operational reasons”.
” Flydubai had planned to begin its operations to India with flight to Lucknow on July 13, Coimbatore on July 14 and Chandigarh on July 23, however, due to operational issues, we have had to delay these flights,” Flydubai CEO Al Ghaith said in a statement.Read

being upgraded to an

Sunil Dutt, director of Chandigarh airport, said: “We have got confirmation from Fly Dubai. They have got permission from the union civil aviation ministry to fly a daily direct flight to Dubai from Chandigarh.” More

To improve tourism infrastructure at Sukhna Lake, the government has sanctioned Rs.27.3 millions for setting up fountains, a tourism information centre and for landscaping. Talking to reporter home secretary of Chandigarh, Ram Niwas said that, the ministry of tourism has given its nod to the proposal sent by the Chandigarh administration.
