The interviewer was shocked that more independent games haven’t begun to follow the same style, Asano revealed the reason the reason is because it’s expensive!
“It’s most likely worth noting that it costs more than you’d imagine. In that respect, it’s a good match for the games you’d expect from Square Enix. It’s unlikely that there’s much to gain from copying other companies,” Asano told 4gamer.Fortunately the cost of this won’t deter Square Enix from releasing more games that follow this model.
An updated version of Live a Live is set to launch exclusively on Nintendo Switch in July, while a remake of Dragon Quest III is currently in development. There are many other games that can benefit from the style, as well. It will certainly be fascinating to observe the next game Square Enix does with HD-2D in the future. While the company has clearly invested in this style of graphics, Asano went on to explain that there’s no currently a “definitive book,” and it will remain evolving in each new game.
“We haven’t put together something like the one we have. The way the story is told differs for each title, meaning that the HD-2D flavour is different each time. In the case of Live A Live for example, the atmosphere in the prehistoric scene is expected differ from the sci-fi scene.
Our expression options have increased thanks to the new concepts we’ve developed. “While the price might be prohibitive for some developers, HD-2D certainly has served as a draw for many gamers D2R ladder items buy. Hopefully, we’ll continue to observe Square Enix find new ways to extend the style as well as a host of other games to be released!
