They weren’t in MyCareer, MyTeam or any of the Play Now matchups. This could be something temporary that will only affect certain regions or variants of the game or 2K Sports may have already eliminated the ads from Play Now matchups amid the weekend chaos. We’ve been in touch with an 2K representative to clarify the issue.
Stevivor claimed that the ads were being played on NBA 2K21’s PC and PlayStation 4 versions. In the year before Halloween, NBA 2K20 started featuring non-skippable advertisements. NBA 2K19 experimented with these in the summer before its launch, around the time that it was put for sale with a 95 percent discount. Both created backlashes that quickly went away.
Advertising in games — and more than just fictitious billboards, or real-life sponsorships — is not new. Madden NFL 10 started with it on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, putting in pre-game bumper advertisements for Snickers more than a decade back.
EA Sports introduced unskippable advertisements into UFC 4 (and 2018’s UFC 3) in the month of September. The UFC 4 launch was on August 4th on Xbox One and Windows PC. EA Sports apologized to the UFC fans and removed all advertisements.
The publication noted that in-game advertisement was “not something new to Buy 2K MT the UFC franchise,” but said its inclusion “should be discussed with the players prior to the game.”
