On the touchline, crews are huddled around laptops. Short-range signalling devices, tracking players’ movement to cheap FUT 22 Coins the millimetre. They sit in the stands along with personnel studying tablets and displaying live data. From thousands of miles away an animation director is watching proceedings unfold on Zoom. It’s not the work of a space-age group of scouts, nor the latest coaching innovation.
They’re the ones who developed FIFA 22. In the very first game ever, EA motion-captured a live 90-minute football matchand tracked players’ movements to an extremely precise level. This data could later be added to its animation database.
EA’s gaming publisher looked for the big details down to the most minute of details: from how a fullback hits the ball using their laces to how a defender instinctively glances over their shoulder when they receive a ball. “Ultimately real-world realism is better play,” states Gareth Eaves, senior animation director at EA who led the meeting remotely. “We thought about doing it for a long time but the technology had not been there.”
Typically, EA uses optical capture, actors and the odd star footballer, such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, to write new animations. However, this requires a limited area that is occupied by only two or three players at a time , making it difficult to strike the ball quickly or move passes from one wing to the other.
It is also difficult to play with motion capture in FIFA 22 Coins restricted areas such as one-on-1 dribbles have to be adapted by FIFA animators to free-flowing moves which ape eleven-a-side matches.
