Toulmin Method

This is another method to organize your argument. You can use this method for your argumentative essay if you want to give a logical foundation to your opinion or main argument. This method was developed by Stephen Toulmin in 1958. Below is the format of the Toulmin method.

Claim: This is the part of the essay where the writer presents his main argument.
Data: It is the section of evidence that the writer uses to prove his argument.
Warrant: It is the bridge in the essay that the writer uses to explain how the evidence supports the argument
Backing: After adding a warrant, writers add more evidence or examples sometimes to support the bridge section.
Counterclaim: It is important to explain the counterclaim of the argument to let the audience decide which argument is correct.
Rebuttal: This component has to be added to prove counter-argument wrong so that your argument can be justified.

Rogerian Method

This is the third and last method for organizing your argument. This method was developed by Carl R. Rogers who was an influential American psychotherapist.
