Sectors 17, 19, 22 No-Vending Regions

Sectors 17, 19 and 22 in  the  Chandigarh City have been announced no-vending zones with the Municipal Corporation getting sanction from the UT Chief Architect for its proposal. These three sectors have a big problem of vending.

Sectors from 1 to 6, which house the who’s who of Chandigarh, Haryana and Punjab, and famous tourist destinations Sukhna Lake and Rock Garden have also been announced  no-vending zones.

Out of 36 sectors with 40 sites for 10,198 street vendors have been removed by the UT Department of Urban Planning. In the first phase, the Chandigarh-based street vendors will be adjusted according to the sites intended by the department. Also, 2,568 mobile street vendors will be allowed and 2,405 necessary services vendors can vend from their real sites subject to non-violation of vending norms.

Sectors 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 23, 36, 38, 46, 54 and most of the  southern regions are involved under the vending zone.In today’s meeting, Mayor Asha Kumari Jaswal focused the need for increasing coverage in other areas, involving Dadu Majra, Maloya, Bhaskar Colony, Sector 25, Sector 39, the Sector 26 transport area,  Mauli Jagran and Vikas Nagar keeping in vision  poor people’s livelihood.

She also said, “We should not make Aadhaar compulsory for Chandigarh inhabitants; we should also admit other residence proofs such as the voter card.” Meanwhile, all these affairs will be tabled for post-facto approval on June 30 at the MC House meeting.

Monthly Fee, Penalty

For the first time in Chandigarh City, a fixed monthly fee and penalty for various kind of street vendors has been launched by the Municipal Corporation. It has been decided that mobile (moving) vendors will charged with a monthly vending fee between Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 and the stationary vendors will be charged in between Rs 300 to Rs 2,000 depending upon the area they are operating in.

In case, if any street vendor commits an offence, he will have to pay a penalty of amount of Rs 500, Rs 1,000 and Rs 2,000 for the first, second and third contravention, respectively. His licence will be cancelled following three contraventions and the vendor will have to apply again for a licence afresh. Those included in unauthorised street vending will have to pay a fine of Rs 15,000. The goods will also be grabbed.
