ADVOCATE Amar Singh Chahal was elected the president of the UT District Bar Association for the second time today.Chahal, also an activist of the Lawyers for Human Rights International (LHRI), defeated his opponent S K Sood by 238 votes. Chahal was earlier elected the president in the year 1998.
It was a close contest between the two from the beginning as first and second round of voting witnessed very thin margin of difference between the two. However, it was the fourth round of voting that brought Chahal near victory with a considerable margin.
On the other hand, advocate Shankar Gupta was elected the vice-president of the Bar. He defeated advocate Ranjan Lohan by a fair margin of 341 votes. While advocate Kailash Chander defeated advocate Harish Bansal for the post of secretary, advocate Harminder Kaur defeated her rival advocate Mithlesh Puri by a narrow margin of 51 votes to become the joint secretary. Advocate Manish Joshi defeated advocate Pankaj Nanda by just 21 votes to become the treasurer of the association.
